Written By Reduan Koh on Sunday, June 24, 2012 | 11:56 AM

Silat Kibau Spring was a silat style mainly originated from Kalimantan, Indonesia. This silat style was brought to Sarawak around in the year 1940'. Kibau spring was more focused on fighting skills, movements and attacks and considered as one of the powerful and dangerous aliran if misused. With only one strike, the practitioner of this aliran can paralyse or kill an opponent. Therefore, before taking up the aliran, the practitioner has to take an oath. After that, the practitioner is forbidden to get involved in a fight except for self-defence, drink alcohol or indulge in any kind of immoral activities. If they break the rules, they will be cursed (disumpah) and something bad will happen to them. They may become paralysed or die mysteriously. The practitioners should be more sincere and honest and not use martial arts for the wrong purpose. Silat kibau spring had existed in Sarawak before the arrival of James Brooke. That time, the British soldiers were scared of the kibau spring exponents and considered them dangerous. Therefore, they banned the aliran. If they found out you were a practitioner of this aliran, they would put you in the jail for six months without a trial. The practice of the silat kibau spring aliran is now allowed freely. To achieve a higher level, the practitioners had to pass five stages of tests - each stage is divided into a thousand kinds of fighting skills (jurus). Normally, to learn one kind of buah, practitioners take one to three years. It depends on their ability to finish it … whether fast or slow.
Nowadays, kibau spring was a legal aliran silat and it had been registered with Rumpun Silat Sarawak’ (Sarawak Silat Association). But are not allowed to enter any competition or stage any martial arts performance. On the pengeras (a gift to the guru (master) ), the person who wanted to join the aliran silat had to prepare four items - a thread, a piece of white cloth (half meter long), a small piece of iron and a bottle of pen ink.

The thread represents the vein while the white clothe represents the spirit, the iron represents the bone and the ink represents the type of the blood. All of these elements will be put together. The arrangement of the items are like this - the iron and the ink will be put on the cloth. The thread will be used to tie up the cloth. This small parcel will be used to protect the followers - should something bad happen to them. They are the pillars of the establishment of Community Silat Sarawak or in short known as RSS. 12 Teaching is a sacred origin :
